Hann Humphreys and Caroline Appleyard stand out against Tigers

HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team used a strong defensive effort and goaltending performance to secure a 1-1 tie in its Pride game against No. 11 Princeton. Caroline Appleyard scored the lone Big Green goal on a breakaway in the third period and Hann Humphreys saved 34 of the 35 shots they faced in their first start since 2022.
Despite being outshot through the majority of the first period, the Big Green battled back, outshooting the Tigers 13-7 in the second period. The Big Green had three power play opportunities through the first two periods but could not convert. The Tigers also had a power play opportunity, but the Big Green defense and goaltending continued to shine, keeping the game scoreless headed into the third period.
"I think the team did a really, really good job of picking up bodies and picking up sticks and pucks in front, so they made my job really easy," Humphreys said about their performance. "The [defense] did so well. It just made it so easy for me."
With Princeton pressuring at the start of the third period, the Big Green swung momentum. A blocked shot by Hamilton Doster in the defensive zone sent Appleyard flying through the middle of the ice. Doster found her teammate near Princeton's blue line and Appleyard snuck the puck by Princeton's goaltender on the breakaway.
"[Doster] did all that," Appleyard said about her goal. "Today, what set us apart was we played with a lot of heart. There's a ton of really good bench energy and everyone really wanted each other to do really well, and I think that translated really well and we were able to get a lot of shots on net and have a decent result."
Seven minutes later, Princeton's Annie Kuehl beat Humphreys to tie the game at one, but she was charged a crosschecking major on the same play when she made contact with Humphreys after the goal. The Big Green only registered three shots on the five-minute power play before finding themselves on the power play again with just under two minutes remaining in the game. Dartmouth committed a roughing penalty of its own with 45 seconds remaining in the period and sent the game to overtime.
Due to the penalties, the traditional three-on-three overtime was played four-on-four. The Big Green were outshot again in the overtime period, but Humphreys stood tall in net, stopping all seven shots they faced in the five-minute period to earn the tie.
Assistant Coach Jason Carter praised the team's ability to do the little things well in the tie, including getting pucks deep in the zone and playing low to high.
"[It was] a great effort for 60 full minutes. It was really nice to see that in all three zones, all three periods. It was a really great effort from start to finish, even into overtime," Carter said.
The Big Green will return to action at Thompson Arena Saturday for a 4 p.m. puck drop against No. 6 Quinnipiac. The matchup with the Bobcats will also celebrate youth hockey, and anyone under the age of 17 who wears a hockey jersey to the game will receive free admission.
The game will be available to watch on NESN and stream on ESPN+. Live stats, radio, and international stream will also be available on the website.
