HANOVER, N.H. – Luke Haymes scored with 95 seconds remaining in the third period to tie the game at 3-3 to send it to overtime. Colgate scored with 1:10 left in overtime to claim a 4-3 victory over the Dartmouth men's hockey team in ECAC Hockey action on Friday evening at Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth moves to 5-8-6, 3-5-4 while Colgate improves to 9-11-3, 6-4-1.
"We thought we had to slow them down and wanted to be physical with them," said Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey
Reid Cashman. "Not sure we did that much in the first couple periods, but I thought we got to our game in the third. I thought we were great in overtime, probably the best overtime we've had all year."
Facing a 3-2 deficit with just minutes left on the clock, the Big Green pulled
Cooper Black in favor of the extra attacker. The strategy worked as Haymes found the back of the net with 1:35 left to tie the game. A shot by
Ian Pierce from the point was deflected in front of goal and
Cooper Flinton made the pass to the backdoor to a wide-open Haymes for the tap in.
Both teams had several chances early in overtime to win as they both hit the pipe. Dartmouth held the edge in shots during the overtime, outshooting Colgate, 6-3. However, it was the Raiders that walked away with two points after Simon Labelle scored with 1:10 left for the win.
The game was tied 2-2 going into the third period and the Raiders scored at the 14:06 mark to take a 3-2 lead. Jake Schneider received a pass off the boards from Daniel Panetta and was able to put his shot past
Cooper Black to put Colgate in front.
Colgate scored late in the first to take a 1-0 lead, but Dartmouth bounced back with two goals in the second to take a 2-1 lead before the Raiders grabbed their second of the night midway through the second to even the score.
Both Big Green goals in the second period came less than a minute apart. Haymes tied the game up at 1-1. Haymes sprung from the penalty box after serving a two-minute minor and was on the receiving end of a pass from
Cam MacDonald that sent him through on goal. Haymes took advantage of the breakaway and beat Colgate goaltender Carter Gylander for his first goal of the night.
Dartmouth kept the pressure up as
Joey Musa scored shortly after to put the Big Green ahead. After winning the faceoff in the offensive zone, Musa redirected a shot from
Eric Charpentier into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
Owen Desilets recorded his first collegiate point after picking up the second assist.
Speaking about the deficit late in the game, Haymes said, "Third period has been our best period all year. I think that was our mentality going into this one and every game in general."
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow night for an ECAC Hockey and Ivy League tilt against No. 13 Cornell. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet. Tickets for the contest are available for purchase through the Dartmouth Athletics ticket office.
Notes: This is the second-straight two-goal game for
Luke Haymes after he scored twice in the 6-2 victory against RPI last Saturday.
