The youngsters are leading the way for the Big Green
The youngsters are getting it done for the Big Green this week. First-year tennis player Michela Moore downed the 2022 Patriot League Player of the year and earned a win in doubles play. Her play helped lead the Green to a 5-2 win over BU. Sophomore Brandon Mitchell-Day laid it all out on the court with 22 points and 10 rebounds in topping Ivy League rival Brown in basketball.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Michela Moore, Fy., Monte Sereno, Calif., Women's Tennis
Michela Moore, one of a few talented first-years on the Dartmouth women's tennis team, was key in the Big Green's, 5-2, win over Boston University with victories in both doubles and singles. Partnering with fellow rookie Peyton Capauno, Moore earned a victory at No. 2 doubles before winning in straight sets over 2022 Patriot League Player of the Year Victoria Carlsten at No. 2 singles. The win improved Dartmouth's record to 2-0 and avenged 2023's 6-1 loss to the Terriers.
Brandon Mitchell-Day, So., St. Louis, Mo. F., Men's Basketball
Brandon Mitchell-Day put forth a sensational effort, posting 22 points and 10 rebounds for his third-career double-double. He scored 16 second-half points to help the Big Green erase an 11-point halftime deficit, while also adding two assists and two blocks in a ,75-71, win over Brown. For the game, Mitchell-Day shot 7-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range. He was 5-of-7 in the second half, including 3-of-3 from distance. Mitchell-Day posted Dartmouth's first 20+ point, 10+ rebound double-double since Dame Adelekun last Jan. 28 vs. Columbia. It marked the best 3-point percentage in a game by a Big Green player with at least five makes since Dusan Neskovic was also 5-of-6 at Fordham on Nov. 7, 2022. Mitchell-Day was clutch down the stretch. In the final two minutes, he hit a 3-pointer to go ahead then blocked a shot and grabbed the rebound. Mitchell-Day went on to grab an offensive rebound and hit two free throws to put Dartmouth in front, 73-71, before capping off the victory with a dunk in the final seconds.
