HANOVER, N.H.—The No. 17 Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated No. 6 Cornell in front of over 2800 fans at Thompson Arena on Friday night. The Big Green used two goals in both the second and third period to defeat the Big Red, 4-3.
The first period saw 19 combined shots with Dartmouth netminder Roan Clarke making 11 saves.
Dartmouth opened the scoring just 2:56 into the second period while on the power play. CJ Foley took a shot through traffic that Hayden Stavroff batted down. Cooper Flinton collected the puck and slid it to Sean Chisholm while falling to the ice. Chisholm ripped home his fifth of the season from the left faceoff circle to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Just under 10 minutes later, the Big Red answered with a shorthanded goal to tie the game at one.
Before the Dartmouth power play ended, the Big Green took the lead back. The Big Green controlled the puck deep in the Cornell zone. Flinton and Nikita Nikora exchanged passes before Nikora found Stavroff in the slot. He fed a quick pass to the first-year and Stavroff made no mistake for his fourth goal of the year. Nikora picked up his seventh assist of the season while it was Flinton's fourth of the campaign.
After 40 minutes of play, the Big Green led 2-1 despite being outshot 18-13. Dartmouth won 11 of 17 faceoffs in the second period.
The Big Red came out for the third period and tied the game at two just 80 seconds into the third.
After a back and forth play for nearly 10 minutes, the Big Green took the lead back as John Fusco netted his third goal of the year. Chisholm won a battle deep in the Cornell zone and bumped the puck to Nikora below the Cornell goal line. Nikora fed the puck to the point to J. Fusco and then received a return pass from J. Fusco. Nikora held the puck as J. Fusco skated to the high slot, Nikora found J. Fusco. J. Fusco blasted a slapshot that snuck through the Cornell netminder to give Dartmouth a 3-2 lead.
The lead was short lived as Cornell tied the game at three with 5:10 remaining in regulation.
For the third time of the game, the Big Green answered. Foley intercepted a breakout pass from Cornell forward and sauced a backhand pass to Steven Townley. Townley one touched the puck to his forehand and ripped a wrister off the left post and into the net for his second goal of the season. Foley picked up his fourth assist of the season.
Cornell pulled its goalie with 1:47 left in regulation but could not tie the game up.
Clarke spearheaded the Big Green with 29 saves while seven Big Green players had a point. Nikora, Stavroff, Chisholm, and Flinton all had two points in the win.
The Big Green went 2-2 on the power play while scoring on the two lone shots. They limited Cornell to six power play shots and no goals while killing off nine minutes of power play time.
Nikora has had multiple points in the last four games while having eight assists and one goal in that span. Stavroff has scored in each of his first four NCAA games. Chisholm has netted a goal in four straight games and has seven points in the last three games. Both Foley and J.Fusco are on four game point streaks with J. Fusco scoring in three of the last four games.
