LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Dartmouth had the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning of a close game with Michigan, but ultimately suffered a 4-2 loss to the Wolverines on Sunday, marking the end of the Cardinal Classic in Louisville.
Â
At 3-7 on the season, the Big Green now set their sights on next weekend's visit to Harvard for their first Ivy League series of the season beginning Saturday, March 23.
Â
Michigan put up two runs in the second before trading runs with the Big Green in the third. The Wolverines added another in the fifth, taking a 4-1 lead, and
Mary Beth Cahalan's RBI double gave Dartmouth life in the top half of the seventh.
Â
Cahalan was 2-for-3 at the plate and now has multiple hits in back-to-back games, both against Big Ten opponents. Dartmouth totaled five hits to Michigan's six, half of which came from Maddie Erickson, who was 3-for-3 with a fifth-inning home run.
Â
Rachel McCarroll, Dartmouth's starter in the circle, pitched two innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
Jensin Hall pitched the remaining four innings, also allowing two earned runs and three hits, and striking out five. Hall previously fanned 11 in a shutout win over South Dakota in the Big Green's opening game of the Cardinal Classic.
Â
Down to the final three outs and facing a three-run deficit,
Cwen Wilson and
Ashley Frantz both singled to help the Big Green spark a potential rally before Cahalan plated Frantz with an RBI double, bringing the Big Green within two. Lauren Derkowski, who struck out 10 during a complete game, was able to retire
Allie Ohde for the game's final out.
Â
Dartmouth's three-game series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23, with the opener set for 12:30 p.m., and closes with a standalone game on Sunday, March 24. Each game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on DartmouthSports.com.
