HANOVER, N.H. – Prior to competing in four straight weekends of nationals, the Big Green wrapped up the sixth weekend of the spring season at three regattas. The open and women's sailing teams competed at the NEISA Open Dinghy Championship, the Women's New England Fleet Race, and the Mendum's invite.
At the NEISA Open Dinghy Championship for the Coast Guard Alumni Bowl, sailing was delayed on both days due to rain and lack of wind. In the A division, the Big Green put up 88 points, followed by a 64-point performance in the B division to post 152 points for an eighth-place finish.
The Big Green started at the bottom of the pack, posting 15 points in the first race to sit third from the bottom. They quickly jumped to the middle of the pack and continued a steady climb over both days of racing to secure an eighth-place finish.
At the Women's New England Fleet Race Championship, the Big Green women put up 65 points in the A division and finished second in the B division with 37 points, to secure a third-place finish, only two points behind second-place Boston College.
The Big Green struggled early dropping as low as fifth before climbing back and racing in a close battle with Brown, the eventual regatta winners, and Harvard. Harvard, who finished fifth, battled closely with the Big Green throughout the second half of the race, but Dartmouth was able to keep ground between the Crimson, who finished fifth, and the fourth-place finishing Roger Williams Hawks.
Finally, at the Mendum's Invite hosted by UNH, weather made a difficult day for sailing, posting winds in each direction. The Big Green finished sailing in the A division in a three-way tie for fifth with 26 points.
They led the way in the B division, posting ten points and cruising to a first-place finish, overall finishing fourth in the regatta with 36 total points, five points behind the second-place finisher and two points behind the third-place finisher. The Big Green's 36 total points was 13 more than the next team.
The Big Green will sail in two regattas next weekend, the Open Team Race Nationals from Thursday to Saturday, and the Little 3 regatta hosted by Middlebury on Saturday.
