HANOVER, N.H. — Mike Harrity, the Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation, announced on Thursday that Dartmouth has extended the contract of head field hockey coach
Mark Egner. The Big Green are coming off a strong 2023 season which saw them post their most wins since 2018, along with their first Ivy League victories since that same season.
Â
"Mark is committed to helping his student-athletes grow and reach their potential as players, and people," said Harrity. "The positive trajectory of the program is clear, and I have confidence that Mark will continue to build on that momentum. We are excited to support and work closely with him in the coming years."
Â
Egner finished his fourth year (third season) at the helm of the Big Green this fall. Hired just before COVID shut down college athletics, what would have been Egner's first season was canceled in 2021. But he found a way to begin connecting with his student-athletes and building the program from the ground up. In his first game on the sidelines in 2022, the Big Green beat UC Davis, as Dartmouth began his first season 4-3 — also topping Central Michigan, Bryant and Merrimack. The start of 2022 was highlighted by a 4-3 victory over Northeastern for the program's first win against the Huskies since 1987.
Â
"Serving as the head coach of Dartmouth field hockey has been one of the greatest honors of my life," said Egner. "While I'm immensely proud of the steps forward our program has taken in recent years I'm confident our best years are ahead of us. I'm excited to continue this journey with the wonderful people I get to share bus trips, practices and game days with."
Â
The Big Green made strides in 2022; their Ivy League slate featured seven losses by a total of nine goals, including five straight one-goal defeats (two of which were against nationally-ranked foes Harvard and Princeton). The 2023 Big Green broke through in a big way, defeating Brown 2-0 on September 30 for their first Ivy League victory since 2018. Dartmouth also ended the season with a 3-1 Senior Day win over Columbia.
Â
In the end, Dartmouth finished 6-9, also beating Stonehill (6-1), Merrimack (4-3 in overtime), Colgate (5-4 in overtime) and Sacred Heart (3-2 in a shootout) as the resilient Big Green doubled their 2022 win total, despite playing two fewer games.
Â
On an individual level, a number of Big Green have flourished, including
Bronwyn Bird, who is a three-time All-Ivy and 2022 All-Region honoree. Lucia Campaño jumped on the scene as a first-year last season, garnering second team All-Ivy and second team NFHCA All-Region. She led the Big Green in goals (8) and points (19), which included scoring five of Dartmouth's nine goals in Ivy League play.
Â
Outside of Dartmouth, Egner has been heavily involved in USA Field Hockey. After serving as an assistant coach for the United States Under-18 team, he
was named head coach in September. Egner recently helped the U18s finish second at a four nations tournament in Leuven, Belgium. He is also currently a
candidate for FIH Level 5 coaching certification.
Â
Prior to Dartmouth, Egner spent five seasons at William & Mary, with the last two as associate head coach. Prior to that, he was at Longwood for two years.
