NEWTON, Mass. – Dartmouth men's soccer returned to the pitch Friday, opening their 2024 season at Boston College. The Big Green tied the game about halfway through the first half but were unable to find the back of the net again, ultimately falling to the Eagles 2-1.
The Eagles got on the board first, scoring only 6:42 into the game.
16 minutes later and just past the halfway point, the Big Green found themselves with their second corner kick of the game.
Phineas Callahan took the corner and while the ball came outside the box, it found Callahan again. He then shot the ball across to
Vasilis Moiras who headed it in past the Eagles goalkeeper to tie the game.
Just over two minutes later, the Big Green had another stellar chance and nearly took the lead when first-year
Eidur Baldvinsson came just inches away from his first career collegiate goal, ripping a shot off the right post.
Neither team threatened much more in the first half, sending the Big Green and Eagles into halftime tied at one a piece.
Both teams started the second half looking to strike first. The Eagles pressured through most of the period, maintaining possession in the Big Green's defensive zone.
In the 73
rd minute, Boston College finally broke through, taking a 2-1 lead. They continued to pressure and despite a few chances, the Big Green did not score another goal, falling to the Eagles.
While the Big Green were only in game one of their season, the Eagles had already taken the field numerous times and Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi was proud of his team's compete.
"We ran for each other. We worked for each other. We were able to get a goal back after giving up a goal in the first half, so I was just really proud of the boys' fight," Oshoniyi said. He also praised his backline and senior goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou for making big plays in big moments while under a lot of pressure in the second half of the game.
Despite opening their season on the road, the Big Green will return home for five straight nonconference home games. With so much ahead, Oshoniyi said "We have to build our fitness, we have to be able to play with a little bit more courage on the ball for longer periods of time and I think if we do that, we have enough quality we will make chances."
The Big Green will take Burnham Field for the first time in the 2024 season this Thursday against Fairleigh Dickinson. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. To purchase tickets to the home opener, click
