HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green opened their home schedule Thursday, welcoming the undefeated FDU Knights to Burnham Field. Carried by sophomores
Vasilis Moiras and
Trenton Blake and securing goals from four different goal scorers, Dartmouth defeated the Knights, 4-1.
The Big Green opened the scoring exactly 19 minutes in when Moiras picked up the ball around midfield, carried through defenders, and shot the ball from right outside the box and past the goalkeeper.
Just over five minutes later,
Trenton Blake doubled Dartmouth's lead. Moiras sent a cross through the box to
Eidur Baldvinsson who one touched it to Blake. Standing in the middle of the box and uncovered, Blake shot the ball towards the top of the net and in.
Blake, who was one of the team's leading scorers last year was happy to score a goal in only the second game of the season.
"It means a lot to get on the scoreboard this early in the season," Blake said. "It's something we can build momentum off of and it's just a good confidence booster for the year."
In the 47
th minute, Blake found the scoresheet again, this time returning the favor to teammate Baldvinsson.
Phineas Callahan passed the ball to Blake, who deep in the box, sent the ball to Baldvinsson in the middle, beating four defenders and the goalkeeper to put the Big Green up by three and earn his first collegiate goal.
Just under three minutes later though, the Knights responded, making the score 3-1.
Still down by two, the Knights' Kevin Leonhard earned his second yellow card of the game, setting his team back a man. The Big Green took advantage as Blake collected his second assist of the game when he passed to
Raul Vargas on a two-on-one to extend Dartmouth's lead back to three.
Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi was happy for all four goal scorers. "To get Eidur [Baldvinsson] on the board this season, I think is big," Oshoniyi said. "And we are happy for Raul [Vargas], going into his junior year and to finally get a goal, we are really happy for him."
While Dartmouth can celebrate the win tonight, it is back to business tomorrow and time to continue to improve as they welcome St. Mary's California to Burnham Field on Sunday. Both Oshoniyi and Blake emphasized the importance of getting out to a quick start against the Gaels.
"Just coming out of the gate with a little more urgency, a little more passion and hunger to put a team down when you have them against the ropes a little bit," Oshoniyi said about what he wants to see in Sunday's game. "I think they are ready for that… I'm excited to see they guys play on Sunday."
Kickoff on Sunday against the St. Mary's (California) Gaels is set for 1 p.m. Following the game, the Big Green will host an autograph session. You can buy your tickets
