Football Completes Successful Final Week of Camp

All eyes are now on the season opener against Fordham
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth football team has wrapped up its third and final week of preseason camp, which featured continued progress and building excitement for the season opener, which is now only one week away. The Big Green held their second scrimmage of camp on Tuesday, and are improving every day, with focus now turning to week one opponent Fordham.
When asked for takeaways from the three-week camp, Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach Sammy McCorkle began by focusing on the word progress.
"We were looking to progress from day to day, and I believe we achieved that," he said. "We got better every day, with each practice. We wanted to challenge our players, put them in tough situations, and we mixed that up with game situations, long drives, putting them in situations they're going to face during the season. And I thought they responded well.
"They're doing a really good job of understanding what we're trying to do schematically — on offense, defense and special teams — and they're bought in," McCorkle continued. "The big thing is they're holding each other accountable, and that's what we're trying to achieve."
Veteran offensive lineman Nick Marinaro has seen a sense of urgency.
"We have a lot of older guys who have been in the moment before and know what it feels like," he said. "I see a lot of guys who are hungry for that next championship. The defense makes it tough on the offense every single day. That makes the offense have to step up, which we've done throughout the course of camp, but I'm really happy about both sides of the ball and excited for next week."
On Tuesday, the Big Green held their second scrimmage, but first with an afternoon start, which created as close to a game day feel as possible.
"Going to breakfast at 9 a.m., coming here and playing a 1:00 scrimmage, it felt just like a game day," said linebacker Micah Green. "I'm really happy that the team and the young guys got to experience it. This was a game day in our minds, and we all came out ready to play. I'm super excited that this atmosphere was created and we all seem ready to go."
McCorkle saw much-improvement from the Big Green from their first scrimmage.
"We were assignment sound," he said. "The defense came out here with a lot of energy. Offense was a little bit up and down energy wise, at times being a little too cerebral, but I thought our guys knew what to do and the biggest thing now is continuing to execute and finish plays.
"Look forward to our guys continuing to do that with each day going forward."
That has happened, through the rest of this week and will continue into game week. As Dartmouth College begins fall classes on Monday, the Big Green also turn their focus to Fordham, who comes into Memorial Field for a 1 p.m. opening kickoff next Saturday.
"Having experience across the board at every position, those guys have done a phenomenal job leading their groups and at the same time, holding themselves accountable, showing up every single day," said McCorkle. "We needed guys to step up and perform and I feel like overall, we've had a number of guys do that, and that's something we're going to need.
"We're going to need depth," McCorkle continued. "We need to stay healthy, but injuries occur, and we need to make sure the next guy we put out there at any position is prepared to perform and help us keep going forward."
The Big Green have shared three of the last four Ivy League Championships, but they're hungry for more.
For Marinaro, success in 2024 starts with mentality.
"It starts up front," he said. "Obviously I'm an offensive lineman, so I believe that physicality up front is important on both sides of the ball. We have the opportunity to be really physical, really fast, on the offensive line as well as the defensive line, and then give our playmakers some opportunities to make some big plays."
