HANOVER, N.H.—The Dartmouth field hockey team notched its first win of the 2024 season with a 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart at Chase Field on Sunday.
At the 11:43 mark of the opening quarter, the Big Green got on the board on a penalty corner. Gabriela Braceras played the ball as Olivia Galiotos teed the ball up for Ella Bowman. Bowman took a low shot that snuck inside the right post to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
After the first quarter, Dartmouth led 1-0 while Kylie McKinley who made her first career start in goal made one save in the opening 15.
Early in the second quarter, Dartmouth doubled its lead as Zoe Schaffer scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Braceras. Braceras took the ball and drove to the cage along the end line and found Schaffer in front of the net for the finish.
At halftime, Dartmouth led 2-0 and were outshooting Sacred Heart 5-2.
Just over two minutes into the third quarter, Sacred Heart cut its deficit in half with a goal off a penalty corner.
Dartmouth regained its two-goal lead less than four minutes later as Schaffer netted her second goal of the afternoon. Riley Dumigan controlled the ball as she entered the attacking area, Dumigan fired a pass to Amelie Luessmann on the end line. Luessmann picked her head up and fired a pass to Schaffer who one timed the ball into the open net. It was Luessmann's first career point in collegiate field hockey.
Sacred Heart made it a one goal game once again with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter as they scored off a penalty corner.
Dartmouth held off the Pioneers for the rest of the game as they had just two shots on goal in the fourth quarter as McKinley picked up her first career win.
The Big Green finished the game with season highs in shots (10) and shots on goal (8).
The Green and White and back in action on Saturday Sept. 21 at Chase Field to open Ivy League play against reigning Ivy Champions Harvard. The game is slated for a noon start.
