HANOVER, N.H.—The Dartmouth field hockey team opened Ivy League play on Saturday at Chase Field as No. 8 Harvard visited Hanover. Despite outscoring Harvard in the second half, the Big Green fell 3-1 to the Crimson.
The Big Green tallied the first shot of the game as Raina Johns notched a shot on goal that was kicked away from a penalty corner.
12:45 into the opening quarter, the Crimson opened the scoring on shot from the top of the circle to take a 1-0 lead.
Just over four minutes into the second quarter, Harvard doubled its lead as a rebound found the back of the cage. Harvard added its third goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.
After two quarters of play, Dartmouth had two shots on goal while sophomore goalkeeper Kylie McKinley had four saves.
Neither team found the back of the cage in the third quarter as there was just one shot on goal and a pair of penalty corners.
With 6:05 left in regulation, the Big Green got on the board. Helen Young had the ball at the top of the circle and fired it towards the cage. Lucia Campaño fought through traffic and got a stick on the ball and redirected the ball into the back of the cage. Campaño tallied her first goal of the season and her ninth career. Young picked up her first career point on the play.
Despite the late tally, the Big Green could not complete a comeback. McKinley finished the game with six saves which is a new career high.
The Big Green are back in action on Friday, September 27 as Cornell travels to Hanover.
