Football Finishes Productive Week Two of Camp

HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth football team is one step closer to the season opener, following another productive week of preseason camp. It's a week that included the Big Green's first scrimmage of 2024, which saw plenty of competition and highlight moments for both the offense and defense.
"I was happy with how many plays we got in," said Sammy McCorkle, Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach following Tuesday's scrimmage. "We put a lot of situational stuff out there. Obviously, only being our ninth practice, there's a lot of stuff that we figured was going to happen, some situational things we have to clean up, but I thought overall, the energy was really good.
"We had guys who competed, guys who stepped up," McCorkle continued. "We need to clean up some mistakes. But for the first scrimmage, being in the stadium, overall, I was really pleased with the way we came out here, performed and ran around, and the energy level."
The week began with a team bonding trip to nearby Storrs Pond, along with morning practices on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Big Green returned to Blackman Fields on Saturday afternoon to round out the week.
"I feel good," said McCorkle. "We're getting better each day and that's what we say; let's be 1-0 every single day. I do feel, especially the last couple practices, that we've been 1-0. Making sure that we improve.
"We don't want to walk off this field just being the same or going backwards," McCorkle continued. "The biggest thing for us to is coming out business-like, coming out there handling our business and being crisp every opportunity we get."
Dartmouth's offense and defense are fiercely competing every day, knowing they will only get help each other improve for the common goal of chasing an Ivy League Championship.
"We took a step in the right direction," said defensive back Jordan Washington following Tuesday's scrimmage. "I think the next step is being consistent throughout all the practices, not having any unforced errors or mistakes."
On the other side of the ball, Washington is liking what he's seeing from the offense.
"The offense has a lot of great potential," he said. "We have a lot of weapons on the outside, some good backs. I trust [Jackson] Proctor (at quarterback). Proctor works very hard; they're in good hands."
The Big Green continue a busy preseason, with the next week featuring the team's second and final scrimmage of camp on Tuesday morning at Memorial Stadium.
