HANOVER, N.H.—Dartmouth men's hockey fell to Yale on Friday night 3-2 at Thompson Arena.
The Big Green took an early lead just over three minutes into the first period. While on the power play, the Big Green had control of the puck inside the Bulldog zone. Ian Pierce picked up the puck on the left point and fired the puck to the right faceoff circle. Hank Cleaves received the pass and took a shot that was blocked, the puck came back to Pierce who fed it to the left faceoff dot for John Fusco. J. Fusco blasted a one-timer that found the back of the net. It was J. Fusco's fifth of the season while Pierce and Cleaves each picked up their fourth assists.
Yale tied the game at one at the 7:33 mark and then took a 2-1 lead with 1:04 remaining in the first period.
Dartmouth outshot the Bulldogs 10-9 in the first period while also winning 14 faceoffs in the opening 20 minutes.
The second stanza saw the Big Green outshoot Yale 11-6, despite the 11 shots, Dartmouth failed to find the back of the net. Yale was held scoreless in the second period and held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
4:45 into the third period, Pierce netted his first goal of the season to tie the game. Dartmouth broke out of their zone and Cleaves carried the puck into the Yale zone and dumped the puck to Hayden Stavroff. Stavroff saw Pierce in the slot and slid it to the senior who fired home his ninth career goal.
The game looked to be heading to overtime but with less than five seconds remaining in regulation, Yale fluttered a point shot through traffic that found the back of the net.
Roan Clarke made 19 saves in the loss while Dartmouth outshot Yale 35-22.
Cleaves tallied his second straight multi point game with a pair of assists. Pierce tallied his second multi point game of the season. Stavroff has at least a point in six of the last seven games.
As a team Dartmouth went 30-26 in the faceoff circle for a 53.6 winning percentage. Luke Haymes went 11-3 in the faceoff circle while Sean Chisholm also won 11 draws.
It was the third time this season that Dartmouth tallied 30 or more shots.
Dartmouth went 1-2 on the power play with two shots while holding Yale to just three shots on their two unsuccessful power plays.
The Big Green are back on the ice on Saturday as they close out the home weekend against Brown. Saturday's game is presented by Townline Equipment with puck drop slated for 7 PM.
