NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.—No. 17 Dartmouth men's hockey fell in its final non-conference game of the season against Merrimack on Sunday. Despite a late goal from CJ Foley, the Big Green fell 2-1.
The Warriors opened the scoring just 10 seconds into the game to take an early 1-0 lead.
That was the only scoring of the opening period as the teams combined for just nine shots with Merrimack edging out Dartmouth 5-4.
3:51 into the second period Merrimack took a 2-0 lead while on the power play.
The second period saw Dartmouth outshoot the Warriors 3-2 as shots were tied at seven a side after 40 minutes.
Dartmouth got on the board at the 10:52 mark of the third period to cut the lead in half. Dartmouth had the Warriors hemmed in their own zone as the puck went up the wall out a scrum. Hayden Stavroff chipped the puck back to Foley at the point. Foley skated the puck in and ripped a wrist shot from the top of the circle that found top corner of the net. It was his fourth goal of the year while Stavroff picked up his fifth assist.
Despite outshooting Merrimack 11-7 in the third period, the Big Green's comeback came up short.
Roan Clarke made 12 saves in net for the Big Green.
Dartmouth senior captain Steven Townley skated in his 100th career game on Sunday against Merrimack.
The Big Green blocked 13 shots in the game with Eric Charpentier blocking a team high three.
Dartmouth won 57.4 percent of the faceoffs while Luke Haymes won 11 faceoffs. Sean Chishiolm went 10-5 for a 66.7 faceoff percentage.
The Big Green close out non-conference play with wins over Stonehill, Vermont, and Alaska-Anchorage.
Dartmouth returns to Thompson Arena on Friday, Jan. 10 to take on Yale with faceoff scheduled for 7 PM.
