ITHACA, N.Y.—The Dartmouth volleyball team closed out its New York road trip on Saturday against Cornell. The Big Green fell in three sets to the Big Red.
Set One (L, 25-19)
Cornell jumped out to an early lead as they led 6-4 after the first 10 points, the Big Red increased the lead to 10-6 which led to a Dartmouth timeout. The Big Green responded out of the timeout and tied the match at 15 after 30 points, the back and forth continued until Cornell took a 21-18 lead which led to a second Dartmouth timeout. The timeout did not phase the Big Red as they took the set 25-19 after the timeout.
Maddie LaFata had three of Dartmouth's four kills in the opening set as Kauany Gutz had the other kill. EllaMae Fitzgerald had three service aces in the set along with a pair of digs. LaFata had a team high five digs in the set. Gutz tallied a solo block in the set while the Dartmouth defense forced seven attack errors.
Set Two (L, 25-23)
The second set was a back and forth set with 15 ties and seven lead changes. The first 18 points of the set were split as the teams were tied at nine. Dartmouth then took the next three points to take a 12-9 lead which led to a Cornell timeout. The Big Red responded as they took a 17-16 lead which forced a Dartmouth timeout. Dartmouth tied the match at 17 and the teams kept battling until Cornell took a 22-20 lead and Dartmouth called timeout. Dartmouth kept fighting but Cornell eventually took the set 25-23.
Emma Symon and LaFata each had a Dartmouth best three kills in the set while Gutz had two, both Zori Brown and Riley Imamura had a kill in the set. Dartmouth had two blocks in the set with Symon, Brown, Gutz, and Molly Power each having a block assist. Sophia Gagnepain had seven assists while Brown and Fitzgerald had an assist. Gagnepain had the only service ace in the set. Gutz had eight digs while Gagnepain and LaFata each had five.
Set Three (L, 25-14)
The Big Red took eight of the first 10 points of the third set which forced a Dartmouth timeout. Cornell held control of the set and did not let go as Dartmouth could not narrow margin. The Big Green called timeout as Cornell led 19-9 but the Big Red took the set 25-14.
Gutz had four kills in the set while Symon had three for the Big Green. Power and Irmak Makasci had a kill as well for the Big Green. Fitzgerald notched four digs while Gutz had three in the set.
Gutz led Dartmouth with seven kills, both Symon and LaFata had six kills for the Big Green as six players had a kill for Dartmouth. Gutz had a team high 12 digs, it is the fourth time this season she had double digit digs. LaFata had 10 digs for the Big Green. Gagnepain had 16 assists, she has 268 assists this season which is fifth in the Ivy League.
The Big Green return to Hanover for pair of matches against Princeton on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6 PM and Penn on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 5 PM.
