HANOVER, N.H. – On Friday, Dartmouth men's soccer welcomed the New Haven Chargers to Burnham Field for its season opener, the first time the two teams have met.
All the scoring came in the first half as
Vasilis Moiras and Guilherme Meira for the Chargers netted one goal apiece, as the two teams played to a 1-1 draw.
Dartmouth moves to 0-0-1 on its young season while the Chargers remain undefeated at 2-0-1.
After being fouled in the box just under 20 minutes into the game, Moiras was awarded a penalty kick. He aimed for the crossbar and snuck the ball in for his first of the season, giving the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Less than seven minutes later, New Haven drew a foul right outside the box. Meira's free kick ricocheted off the post and behind Dartmouth keeper
Konstantinos Dellas to tie the game at one.
In the second half, both teams generated chances and the pitch was open, making for a back-and-forth half.
Trenton Blake and
Eidur Baldvinsson created chances late for the Big Green while New Haven ripped one off the cross bar, but the game remained knotted at one as the clock reached 90.
Dellas made his second career start in goal or the Big Green, this time making five saves and allowing only one goal.
Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi liked the way his team came out of the gate and how they adjusted at halftime.
"I thought the first 30 minutes we played really, really well. We fouled a little bit too much and gave them a lot of opportunities off of restarts. We talked about that at halftime, and I thought we got a little better," Oshoniyi said.
He also liked his team's resilience, shutting down four straight Chargers corner kicks. "They dug deep," Oshoniyi said. "You could see the hunger to not lose that moment."
That mentality is something the Big Green will take into their next game against the Bryant Bulldogs on Tuesday as well as thinking more clinically.
"We have to get a bit more clinical in the 18s. I think on both sides of the 18s, we weren't great," Oshoniyi said. "I think when we are in possession, we're really good, but now it's that final quality in the final third and defending a little bit better in the back third as well."
Dartmouth will return to action Tuesday, when they host Bryant for a 5 p.m. kick off. Tuesday's game will be fan appreciation night; there will be free food for fans while supplies last. For more information, click
