PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Dartmouth men's soccer and Penn were scoreless throughout much of the match. In the end, the Quakers found a second-half goal to win 1-0 on their home turf.
Penn earned its first conference win of the season, improving to 4-1-2 (1-0-1 Ivy), while Dartmouth fell to 3-4-2 (1-1-0 Ivy). The Big Green beat No. 18 Princeton in its Ivy opener and sits at three points in the conference standings.
Coming into the game, Dartmouth was top 15 in the country in shutout percentage. Before Penn's goal in the 72nd minute, the Big Green had not allowed a goal in 289 minutes of game time.
With five minutes to go in the game, Dartmouth was on the attack, applying constant pressure to the Penn back line. The attack earned a free kick just outside the Penn 18-yard box.
Olly Spicer stepped up to take the free kick and put a wonderful strike on goal that was nearly the equalizer, but it was turned away by the Penn goalie.
"That was a fun game today at UPenn, and credit to them for getting the win. I was proud of our performance and felt we were able to show what we have been working on for most of the match," said
Connor Klekota, the Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer.
Trenton Blake finished with a game-high four shots.
Benny Rolla-Mullis,
Nicholas Greer, and Spicer all finished with one shot each.
Klekota continued, "This will be a learning game for us to continue to instill the necessary details to get results in close games, against good teams. I was proud of the response after conceding and I look forward to getting our group back to training on Monday."
Dartmouth held the advantage in corners, six to five, with each team placing two shots on frame.
