HANOVER, N.H. – Brett MacConnell, the head coach of Dartmouth men's basketball, has announced the addition of Bill Courtney and Nick Nichay to his staff ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Nichay joins the Big Green as an assistant coach after spending the past 14 seasons at Franklin & Marshall, including the last seven as head coach of the Diplomats. During his tenure as head coach, Nichay led the team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and a Centennial Conference Championship during the 2024-25 season.
"I've known Nick Nichay for nearly 20 years, and there is no one I trust more. He's been a tremendous head coach for the last seven years and will bring invaluable experience and perspective to our staff," MacConnell said. "Just as importantly, Nick genuinely cares about student-athletes and will have a tremendous impact on the young men in our program."
Under Nichay's leadership, the Diplomats won 96 games and posted three consecutive 20-win seasons. Franklin & Marshall also qualified for the Centennial Conference Tournament in each of the past four seasons and compiled a 35-9 conference record over the last three years. Additionally, the defenses were ranked top 10 nationally in each of the past two seasons.
Nichay originally joined the Diplomats as an assistant coach during the 2012-13 season and was part of 230 cumulative victories. Across his 14 years with the program, Franklin & Marshall made 11 Centennial Conference Tournament appearances, captured two conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times.
While at Franklin & Marshall, Nichay earned several accolades, including back-to-back seasons earning Centennial Conference Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Additionally, he was named to the 2023 Most Impactful DIII Head Coaches list.
He began his basketball career in 2006 at his alma mater, Rutgers, where he served as a student manager all four years. Nichay then spent a year at Hartwick as a lead assistant before heading to Le Moyne, where he served as an assistant coach from 2010 to 2012.
Nick has consistently built some of the best defenses in the country at any level, and he adds another humble, hardworking, relationship-driven coach to our staff who perfectly reflects the culture we want at Dartmouth." MacConnell added.
Courtney joins the Big Green as the Director of Basketball Operations after spending two seasons with the University of Miami men's basketball team, where he served as a graduate assistant. Prior to his time with the Hurricanes, Courtney began his career at his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, where he served as a manager for the men's basketball team from 2019 to 2023. In both roles, his key responsibilities have been assisting in scouting (specifically defensively), analytics and on-court development of players.
"Bill Courtney is someone I feel incredibly fortunate to add to our staff — I've joked that it feels like winning the draft lottery because I truly could not have found a better young prospect in this profession," MacConnell said.
The Ithaca, N.Y. native earned his bachelor's degree in business analytics from Notre Dame in 2023, and is currently finishing his master's in sports administration at Miami. He has experience on the biggest stage in college basketball, working with teams that have won games in the NCAA tournament. In 2022, Courtney worked with the Fighting Irish as they reached the second round, then experienced similar success as the Hurricanes advanced to the second round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
"Bill is smart, driven, and exceptionally organized, and he'll help us present our program the way we envision it: as a high-level program with championship standards. Beyond that, Bill brings an analytical basketball mind and a fresh perspective that will positively impact our coaching, scouting, and recruiting decisions every day." MacConnell added.
