HANOVER, N.H. – The (RV) Dartmouth football team erased a two-touchdown deficit and carried a lead into the fourth quarter of its home opener, but (RV) Monmouth made a 25-yard field goal with 1:09 remaining to earn a 31-28 win Saturday, Sept. 26, at Buddy Teevens Stadium at Memorial Field.
The Big Green ran for 235 yards, converted 11 of 17 third downs and scored touchdowns on all three trips inside the red zone. Myles Craddock carried the offense with career highs of 22 carries and 140 rushing yards, including a 28-yard touchdown run, and Grayson Saunier had a hand in three scores. He threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 66 yards and another. With those yards, Saunier reached 3,086 for his career, becoming the 11th quarterback in program history to surpass 3,000 passing yards.
Harrison Keith led all players with a career-high 13 tackles, including two for loss. Johnny Stephens added a career-high 11 tackles and the forced fumble. Owen Zalc's four extra points raised his career total to 218, second on Dartmouth's all-time scoring list.Â
Monmouth opened with a 75-yard touchdown drive. Dartmouth answered with a 75-yard march of its own, and Saunier found James Elliott for a 20-yard touchdown on third-and-12. Monmouth then scored twice through the air to take a 21-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Big Green needed just 76 seconds to respond. Craddock broke off an 18-yard run and followed it with a 28-yard touchdown. After a missed 41-yard Monmouth field goal, Saunier led a 12-play, 77-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Taysire Williams with nine seconds left, tying the game 21-21 at halftime.
Dartmouth took its first lead to open the third quarter. A 15-play, 75-yard drive took 7:28 off the clock and finished with Saunier's 3-yard run on third-and-3. Monmouth pushed back to the Dartmouth five, but Stephens knocked the ball loose at the end of a 35-yard reception, and No'Koi Maddox recovered.
Monmouth tied the game with a 4-yard touchdown run with 12:56 left. The visitors a fumble at the Dartmouth 40, but the Big Green defense stopped them on fourth down at the 11. Monmouth got the ball back with 5:50 to play and ran 13 plays over 56 yards to set up the go-ahead kick.
Saunier moved Dartmouth to the Monmouth 42, helped by a pass interference penalty and a 14-yard completion to Kareem Fisher. Zalc's 59-yard attempt at the final horn, which would have been an Ivy League record, fell just short.
