At a time when some would suggest that the phrase "student-athlete" is an oxymoron, Dartmouth continues to demonstrate that excellence in academics and excellence in athletics are not mutually exclusive.
Not only does Dartmouth's football team have a .588 winning percentage among its Ivy League rivals in league play, and the most Ivy championships (17) since formal League competition began in 1956, a recent survey shows that Dartmouth also has the highest graduation rate of football players in the country (nearly 98 percent).
Since 1980, 31 student-athletes at Dartmouth--half of them football players--have been honored as GTE Academic All-America selections.
These statistics barely begin to describe the premium that Dartmouth places on the blend of academic achievement with athletics and general fitness. In an environment that encourages a well-rounded interest in many activities--from music and art to student government and volunteer service--more than 75 percent of Dartmouth's 4,300 undergraduates participate in intercollegiate (the College has 34 varsity teams) and club sports, intramural athletics, physical education and fitness programs, and, through the Dartmouth Outing Club, a range of outdoor recreational activities.
