Roig enters his third season at Dartmouth as the top assistant coach for the 2009 season. On the field he serves as the coach for the hitters and infielders, while off the field he is in charge of coordinating recruiting, player visitations and team travel.
Under his watchful eye last year, the Big Green offense exploded, leading the Ivy League in scoring, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and home runs per game. No less than four offensive players were named to the All-Ivy first team, three of which were unanimous selections. The infielders had an equally successful season, setting a school record for double plays turned and finishing the season as one of just three teams in the league with a fielding percentage of at least .960.
“George coordinates our off-campus recruiting and has excelled at identifying quality players,” head coach Bob Whalen stated. “He also has done a terrific job working with our infielders and developing our hitters every day to the point where we have the ability to score runs against good pitching on a consistent basis.”After one year at Mercer University in Macon, Ga., and an all-conference year at Santa Fe Community College, Roig attended Florida Atlantic University. The senior captain and second baseman helped the Owls to a 34-game winning streak ? tying a national record ? a 54-9 record and its first berth in the NCAA Regionals in 1999. The Owls fell short of advancing to Omaha, falling to eventual champion Miami.
Roig graduated from FAU in 2000, serving as a student assistant coach in 2000 as the team won both the regular-season and tournament championships to earn a return trip to the regionals. After another year on staff as an administrative assistant, Roig came to Dartmouth for a year in 2002. He helped the Big Green to their third straight 20-win season before returning to his alma mater for four years.
Roig served as the pitching coach in 2003 and 2004, guiding the staff to the 12th best ERA in the country in his first year back. In both seasons, Florida Atlantic had three pitchers selected in the MLB First-Year Draft, and one named an All-American.
A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Roig was a high school all-state selection at Spanish River High School, not to mention captain and team MVP in 1995.
Roig has also worked with American Legion Post 227 and acted as the director of the FAU Blue Wave Baseball Camp.
Roig lives in the Upper Valley with his wife Katie and daughter Hannah.
