Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Lauren Jortberg of the women's ski team. In each of her first two years, Jortberg earned All-America honors, making the second team in the 5K classical race as a freshman, and the the second team again last year, but in the 15K freestyle. No stranger to the big stage, she has also skied at the U.S. National Championships each of the past three years, as well as the FIS Junior World Championship in 2017 and U23 World Championship at the end of January.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Lauren Jortberg: So far I have been spending as much time outside as possible. I've been running in the White Mountains, swimming in the river and mountain biking in Burke, Vermont. I've also been dog-sitting a lot lately.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
LJ: My favorite place on campus is Collis porch.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
LJ: The Dartmouth ski team sold me, especially Zoe Snow '18.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
LJ: If I could play another sport at Dartmouth it would be soccer. I quit soccer in high school to focus on skiing, and I miss playing! Thankfully I jump into the ski team's IM soccer team games.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
LJ: So far, my favorite moment skiing for Dartmouth was at NCAA regionals my freshman year. It was a mass start (we all start at the same time), and I skied the whole race in a pack with my teammates. It was also really cool to win a carnival my freshman year, and then celebrate an EISA championship win with the rest of the team.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
LJ: Hanover is very different from Boulder, Colorado. There are so many trees here and way less kombucha.
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?
LJ: To be honest, I probably use snapchat the most.
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
LJ: I can crack my nose (it's pretty loud).
DS: What are your plans for your upcoming off-term?
LJ: I will be training with the Canadian National Team in Canmore, Alberta this fall during my off term!
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
LJ: People on my team call me Lo or LoJo.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
LJ: My post-Dartmouth plans are totally up in the air. I would like to be a professional skier for a couple years, and then hopefully go to veterinary school.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
LJ: I would tell my 15-year-old self, don't worry, your teeth will grow in. I had an unfortunate incident with getting my two top lateral incisor (second teeth) pulled and them never coming in. After surgery and braces, they finally did, but it was a long couple of months waiting for my teeth to come in.
