Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Cha'Mia Rothwell of the women's track & field team. A six-time Ivy League champion between indoor and outdoor seasons in her first two years with the Big Green. The owner of numerous school records, Rothwell has already made her mark on the Ivy track record books as well.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Cha'Mia Rothwell: I'm only taking two classes so I've had a lot of free time, which is unusual. I've been spending a lot of time training and doing research on companies that I would like to work for next summer. It's also been nice to get outside and go kayaking on the Connecticut River.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
CR: My favorite place on campus is Leverone Field House. I spend a lot of time practicing there especially when I'm in-season, but there's also a rich history associated with the facility. Leverone has a bunch of record boards on the walls and it's so cool to see all of the school record holders and Olympians that have come through the program.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
CR: Coach Sandy Ford-Centonze definitely sold me on the recruiting process. When she came to my house for a home visit I could tell that she was really genuine and cared about my success both on and off the track. I also knew that I wanted to go to a school with a strong academic reputation, so Dartmouth was very appealing from that perspective.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
CR: If I could swap, it would be with Ben Ose. He's an absolute beast at the decathlon and I've always wanted to know how it feels to do 10 events over the span of two days.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
CR: Basketball. Basketball was another sport that I played growing up and throughout high school so I miss it sometimes. I just want to play in one game so I can break someone's ankles and hear the crowd go wild.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
CR: Hanover is almost the polar opposite of where I grew up. I'm from Durham, North Carolina where the climate is warmer and the population is much larger than Hanover. There's also endless food options at home such as Chick-fil-A, Bojangles, Cookout, Zaxby's, etc. I'm getting pretty hungry so I'm going to stop there.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
CR: My Nana and Papa have had the greatest influence on my life. I spent a lot of time with them while I was growing up so they have taught me a lot.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
CR: My favorite memory thus far is winning the 60m hurdles at the Indoor Ivy League Championships my freshman year. Not only was that my first Heps, but that was my first time running at The Armory as well so I didn't know what to expect. I will never forget how happy my teammates and coaches were after I won the race.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
CR: My best advice to my 15-year-old self would be don't set limits on yourself and don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone to try something new.
DS: You step outside tomorrow morning and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million (after taxes). What would you do with the money?
CR: I would immediately take care of most of my family's expenses then I'd like to start an educational program for at-risk youth in my hometown. Then if I had any left over money, I would want to spend it on cars and shoes even though my mom would not approve.
