Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Micah Schroder of the softball team. A native of Houston, Texas, Schroder was named to the NFCA Division I All-Region Second Team and was a Second Team All-Ivy League selection this past season. She led the Big Green with a .367 batting average, 44 hits, 29 runs, 13 doubles and 27 RBI. Schroder was second on the team with six home runs.
DartmouthSports.com: What is your favorite place on campus?
Micah Schroder: My favorite place on campus is the practice football fields that are right behind the softball field. I go here a lot to eat with teammates and sit in the sun before practices or hitting. It's really relaxing because it's secluded and typically quiet. I like it more than the green because there's less distractions for when I try to do work, and when I need a study break I can go right to the field to hit.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
MS: The first time I visited campus was for a winter camp my freshman year of high school. I felt an overwhelming sense of home on campus. As the camp went on I realized how much I clicked with the girls who were currently on the team which sold me on the softball program at this school. Even though I would never play with the players that worked the camp, I wanted to be a part of a softball program that put a big emphasis on team culture and the softball program at Dartmouth does this. This along with the beauty of the campus sold me on Dartmouth.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
MS: If I could swap places with one of my teammates I'd probably choose Shelby Wilkison. Shelby has the cutest pug named Dax who I got to spend time with during the season, he's a chill dog. Outside of just being able to be with Dax all the time, I'd want to swap places with Shelby because I never know what she's thinking, but she always has a good mindset. Shelby and I have a lot of fun when we're together so I'd like to be on her end of things to see if I'm annoying or just what she thinks when we're together. Plus, she's a phenomenal pitcher and I tried to be one when I was younger but it just didn't work out.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
MS: If I could play another sport I would play rugby. Rugby is intense and I feel like you have to have a lot of grit to play the sport. I think it would challenge me a lot which is why I am so interested in it. Plus, I have a few friends on the rugby team at Dartmouth and they're all genuine people that I always have fun with when I am around them.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
MS: Besides my parents, I am heavily influenced by my sister Merris. Merris is my best friend and the person who I am closest to in my life. She plays softball at the University of Alabama and has always been such a great role model for me, not only from a softball perspective, but she gives me a good example everyday of what it looks like to be a strong woman. She holds herself high and never expects less than her best in everything she does. It's been motivational and beneficial for me to grow up with her as an example for the person I want to become.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
MS: I guess I have two favorite memories on the field this far. The first would be when me, Schae, Mo, and Taylor hit four back to back homeruns this year. My second favorite memory would be when Loghan Thomas came in as a pinch hitter and hit a homerun to put us ahead in our win against Brown. Loghan pinch hit another homerun as well, but the first was by far one of my favorite memories. Loghan is a workhorse and it made our whole team ecstatic when she came in and hit that homerun. Not only because it helped us win the game, but also because no one is more deserving than Loghan for a moment like that, it was such a good feeling.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
MS: I am a big binge-watching gal but by far the show at the top of the list is The Office. I will shamelessly admit I've watched it 5 times through now (currently in the middle of 6). My sister got me hooked on it and ever since it has been my favorite show. I am a big fan of cringe humor and no matter how many times I watch each episode it never gets old. (The Fire Safety scene invented comedy)
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
MS: My useless talent is my ability to catch foods in my mouth. I am going to brag on myself quick and say I am unusually good at this. On my travel ball team, we would always throw grapes and goldfish at each other in the dugout during games. One year during a tournament in Colorado my team stayed in a hotel with indoor balconies and my teammates were so fascinated by me catching food in my mouth that they made me catch a teddy gram in my mouth that was dropped off the balcony of each floor. So, my hidden useless talent: being able to catch a teddy gram in my mouth that has been dropped off a seventh floor balcony.
DS: What are your plans for your upcoming off-term?
MS: So, I am actually off this following fall. As of now I plan on going back home to Houston to coach a 12u team in my former travel ball organization. I am also looking at pursuing an internship to occupy my time away from school in finance and will be solidifying this position within the next few days.
DS: You step outside tomorrow morning and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million (after taxes). What would you do with the money?
MS: I would buy a bunch of puppies!!! More precisely a few golden retrievers, some french bulldogs, and a corgi. Then with the leftover money I'd buy my mom some land in the country and build her a house and take my dad on a worldwide tour of all the Disney World locations. My mom grew up in Cleveland, Texas which is a VERY rural area, and she's always said that when she gets older she wants to move back out there, or at least move back to the country side. My dad is a huge Disney fan and loves taking the family there, he acts like a little kid when we're at the Disney World in Florida.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
MS: I'm not sure about my post grad plans yet, I'm not even sure of what I want to be. I'm going to either get a job or go to a post grad school, ideally both would be back in the south.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
MS: I would tell myself to only worry about the things that I can control and to surround myself with people and things that make me happy. As a teenager, I was always stressed about school and softball and what my future plans were, but being in college has helped me realize that spending energy and emotions on things you can't yet control is very taxing on your mentality.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
MS: If I could go anywhere right now I would go to Australia. I've always wanted to visit Australia for no other reason than my sister and I have always talked about going. If we ever get a chance, we want to go Skydiving in Australia.
