The last couple of years have wreaked havoc on college sports causing many athletes to lose out on competitive season. This week’s athletes of the week took full advantage of having a fifth year to compete. Vermont native Hanna Utter is dominating the alpine ski venues, including a win in the giant slalom on Saturday at the EISA Championship. Another fifth-year athlete, Aaryn Rai is leading the men’s basketball team as the season draws to a close. He averaged 23.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in games against Penn and Yale this past weekend.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Aaryn Rai, 5-Sr., Markham, Ontario, F, Men’s Basketball
Rai led Dartmouth to an upset win over Penn and nearly another against Yale, averaging 23.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the two games to earn Ivy League co-Player of the Week honors. The fifth-year senior from Markham, Ontario, led the Big Green in scoring in both games, tallying 19 against the Bulldogs before erupting for a career-high 27 versus the Quakers while also grabbing 11 rebounds for his second double-double in eight days and seventh of his career. In both contests, he scored 17 points in the decisive second half, and he shot a collective 63.3 percent from the floor, including 11-of-15 with three 3-pointers against Penn.
