This week’s athletes are representing the Golden State of California with their actions on the court and the field. Senior Taurus Samuels led the men’s basketball team to an impressive, 69-60, upset of the Georgetown Hoyas. In the NIRA semi-finals held on Brophy Field in Hanover, N.H., the women’s rugby teamed downed Brown to advance to the National Championship. The Big Green was led by senior Lilly Durbin who had four tries in the match.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Taurus Samuels, Sr., Oceanside, Calif., G, Men’s Basketball
Taurus Samuels produced career highs with 23 points and six 3-pointers to lead the men’s basketball team to a 69-60 victory at Georgetown, one of the storied programs of the last 50 years. In the opening half when Dartmouth was building up a 16-point halftime lead, Samuels provided 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting with a pair of long balls. The Hoyas made a run in the second half and even briefly took the lead at 50-48, but Samuels was there to respond instantly, drilling a long 3-pointer from the top of the key 16 seconds later, and the Big Green never trailed again. The senior added three other shots from downtown in the second half and finished the game 6-of-10 from the perimeter and 8-of-17 overall. Earlier in the week, Samuels tied for the team lead with 10 points in the season-opening 73-57 loss at Boston College, scoring all 10 in the first 20 minutes for more than half of the Big Green’s points in the first stanza. The win at Georgetown was not only the first for Dartmouth over a major conference opponent in 32 years, but also the first on a major conference’s home court since 1969.
