Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2024 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by the Norwich Inn.
This installment focuses on
Bronwyn Bird of the field hockey team. The Vancouver native was a second team All-Ivy selection in 2021 for the Big Green after starting all 17 games while finishing with four goals and one assist.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Bronwyn Bird: I have been having a lot of fun this summer. I am taking classes that I really enjoy, like Biology 22, working at the library, participating in DRIVE, and spending time outside with my friends.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
BB: If I could swap places with one teammate, I think I would swap with
Carolina Escribano Caceres. She's from Amstelveen, and I think it would be really cool to experience the Netherlands field hockey culture. Field hockey is really popular and competitive, which sounds super cool to grow up with.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
BB: Outside of field hockey, I love to read, bake, play cards, and hike.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
BB: My older brother, Cam, has been my biggest role model. Growing up, I always wanted to be like him and copied him all the time, and seeing him excel in sport, school, and life after university has been super inspiring. He supports me in everything I do, and I appreciate him a lot.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
BB: My best on-field memory in my Dartmouth career is definitely winning our first game against UC Davis last fall. It was our first game back after the pandemic, with 50% of our team not having played a college game. We were down 1-0 until the fourth quarter, and we scored on a turnover taking us to double overtime and shootouts, which we won! That was definitely a great bonding experience in the California heat.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
BB: I grew up in Vancouver, Canada, which has the ocean and the mountains all in one. I was incredibly lucky to be able to grow up in such a beautiful place, with an outdoor activity for every season. Hanover is similar to this with beautiful hikes, skiing, and swimming, and is so beautiful in a different way.
DS: What is your favorite movie?
BB: My favorite movie is Pride and Prejudice (2005). I love rewatching it, especially when I bake.
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
BB: My nickname is Birdy. My last name is Bird and there is a long line of Birds before me who have played competitive field hockey (and other sports) that have all gone by Birdy.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
BB: If I could give advice to my 15-year-old self, I would say to keep working hard and maybe listen to my parents a little more. I am very grateful for the support and advice my parents gave me, and I appreciate their encouragement when I would get stressed about school, field hockey, and life in general, despite the fact that I was very stubborn. They instilled the values of working hard and the golden rule, which I lived by in high school and continue to at Dartmouth.
