Dartmouth Men's Hockey Overwhelms Harvard, 5-1
Dec. 16, 2005
HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman
Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career, leading the Dartmouth men's hockey team to an ECAC Hockey League victory over Harvard, 5-1, on Friday night.
It was the second time this season the Big Green has downed the no. 1 team in the league. Earlier this year Dartmouth defeated Cornell when the Big Red held the top spot in the ECACHL.
Sophomore
David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) also netted two goals as Dartmouth improved to 5-7 overall, 5-5 in ECACHL, while Harvard, No. 14 in both national polls, went to 9-5-1 overall and 7-5 in the league.
Jones took advantage of a power play opportunity in the first stanza to take a 1-0 led into the first intermission. Sean Offers (St. Albert, Alta.) blasted a shot from the point that was deflected by the skate of a Crimson defender just outside the crease.
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) got his stick on the puck during the ensuing scrum in the slot and
David Jones slid the puck into the back of the net for the power play goal at 17:09.
Pritchard made it 2-0 at 2:46 when he got his own rebound and tucked a shot between the left post and Daigneau's blocker off of assists from
Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) and Jarrett Sampson (Prince Albert, Sask.).
Dartmouth made it 3-0 at the 11:10 mark of the second period. Daigneau stopped the initial offering from Sampson, but the rebound bounced right to a waiting Pritchard who hammered it home for his third goal of the season. Shribman had the second assist on the goal.
At the five-minute mark of the third period, Jon Pelle got Harvard on the board, making it 3-1 as each team skated four-on-four.
Jones potted his second of the night with 3:21 remaining for a 4-1 lead, and two minutes later, an empty net goal by Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) accounted for all the scoring.
In the nets, Dartmouth's
Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) tied his career-high with 33 saves, including 14 in the third period, while Harvard's John Daigneau stopped a career-high 38.
The Crimson outshot the Big Green 15-10 in the final period of play but Dartmouth held on for a 43-34 advantage overall. It is the fifth time this year the Big Green has had 40 or more shots on goal.
Dartmouth is off for the holidays and will resume play on Dec. 30 and 31 at the TD Banknorth/Sheraton Catamount Cup. The Big Green will square off with host Vermont on Dec. 30 at 7:05 pm.
