HANOVER, N.H. -- Junior Mike Lang scored a game-high 16 points as Dartmouth shocked Princeton, 50-42, in Ivy League men's basketball action Friday night.
The Big Green (5-13 overall, 2-3 Ivy) broke a seven-game losing streak against the Tigers (10-7 overall, 1-2 Ivy), the preseason favorite to win the Ivy League title. It was the first victory against the Tigers for the four seniors on the Dartmouth squad.
Dartmouth used a dramatic 18-1 run in the final 4:47 of the game, recovering from a nine-point deficit, 41-32.
"I'm just so happy," said senior co-captain David Gardner. "We hung in there. When you look at our record, we did things that a typical team with this record doesn't do. We made a huge run, started things in the defensive end and made some big shots. The crowd gave us a huge lift."
Lang scored nine of his points in that stretch, including a pair of free throws with 1:18 to play, giving Dartmouth the lead, 43-41, for the first time in the game.
On the next possession, Princeton's Judson Wallace made one of two free throws for a 43-42 score with 1:06 to go. Dartmouth answered with the last seven points of the game, including a Gardner layup for a three-point cushion, 45-42, with 36 seconds remaining.
Freshman Chuck Flynn made one of two free throws with 19 seconds left, pushing the Dartmouth lead to 46-42, before Princeton missed a 3-point attempt. Intentionally fouled with four seconds to go, Lang went back to the free throw line, where he buried two more shots, and Johnathan Ball made the possession hurt with a layup at the end.
"I'm extraordinarily proud of this team," said first-year head coach Terry Dunn. "This is a great win for our program, and Joe Scott is one of the best coaches in the country. We beat a storied program tonight."
Also in double figures for Dartmouth was Flynn with 10 points. He also had a game-high seven rebounds as the Big Green outrebounded Princeton, 24-16. Dartmouth also had an edge from the floor, connecting on 54.1 percent while holding the Tigers to 42.4.
For the Tigers, Noah Savage scored 10 points and added five boards.
