NEW YORK, N.Y. - Dartmouth's Kelsey Wiegmann and Sean Furey both won the javelin in first day action at the annual Ivy/Heps Track and Field Championship hosted by Columbia.
Wiegmann (Mill Valley, Calif.) was also competing in the heptathlon, and had to time her throws around the multi-events schedule. On her second javelin throw, the junior came up with a school record 151-5, winning by 16-1.
"I knew it had to be a good one, because I wasn't getting any more," said Wiegmann, who immediately dashed off to the shot put for the heptathlon.
Wiegmann, who didn't throw the javelin in high school, said, "I hope to keep improving. Things are starting to click."
Later in the day, Furey (Methuen, Mass.) was equally impressive in the javelin. The senior threw 227-1, despite dealing with a strong headwind, and won by more than 20 feet.
"It feels good. It's been a long time coming," said Furey, who won his first Ivy championship after battling three-time champ Brian Chaput '04, the winner of three straight titles for Penn from 2002-04. "The wind was a little gusty, but it was the same for everyone."
Meanwhile, Wiegmann, the defending heptathlon champion, is in second place in the multi-events competition with 2774 points. Jamie Greubel of Cornell is first with 2800 after four events. Sunday will feature the long jump, javelin and 800 meter run.
Dartmouth has five of the seven competitors in the heptathlon. In third place is sophomore Jadah Chatterton-Richmond (Rochester, N.H.) with 2647 points, and freshman Cassandre Tanner (Baltimore, Md.) is fifth with 2480. Junior Mattie Chatterton-Richmond (Rochester, N.H.) is sixth with 2358, and freshman Kara Pydynkowski (Danvers, Mass.) is seventh with 2250.

Sophomore Hilary Dionne (Cumberland, R.I.) was sixth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 34:50.32. Junior Megan Olds (Gloversville, N.Y.) qualified for the finals of the 800 meters, clocking 2:13.73 in the trials.
The Big Green women are sixth after Saturday's action with 19 points. Cornell leads with 25.
A strong showing in the hammer helped the Dartmouth men to third place with 29 points. Princeton is first with 42.
Seniors Mike Mozer (Kinnelon, N.J.) and John Moran (Lincoln, Mass.) were second and third with 173-11 and 173-3, respectively, and classmate Marcus Gregg (Virginia Beach, Va.) was sixth with 171-8, for a total of 15 points.
