Hanover, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team (4-6-3/2-1-1 Ivy) lost a hard-fought decision to Boston College (8-5-1/3-2-1 ACC) this afternoon, 1-0. The Eagles gained their advantage on a penalty kick in the 29th minute and would hold on for the win.
The squads played an evenly-matched contest throughout, primarily battling for possession in the midfield. Both struggled to mount a consistent offensive attack, as each team's back line stepped up to the challenge. For the contest, the Big Green outshot the Eagles 8-7.
Dartmouth narrowly missed a big chance to score in the fourth minute when Mike Ordonez (Coral Gables, Fla.) had a shot at an open goal blocked by Boston defender Paul Gerstenberger.
Boston College's star striker Charlie Davies scored his 15th goal of the season in the 29th minute on a penalty kick. Davies got into a tangle with Dartmouth goalkeeper Rowan Anders (Qualicum Beach, B.C.) in the box, resulting in the kick being awarded to Davies. He placed a hard shot into the right side of the net, just past the outstretched arms of Anders, who grazed the ball.
Overall, 17 different Dartmouth players saw action in the contest as Head Coach Jeff Cook subbed freely in an effort to preserve his players for a big Ivy contest at Columbia on Saturday. The Big Green did not miss a beat though, continuing to attack the Eagles' defensive lines.
Dartmouth had a few opportunities go awry late in the game, but ultimately could not find the back of the net.
Anders and sophomore Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) each played a half in goal, combining for three saves. Boston College's Chris Brown played a complete game shutout, making four stops.
The Big Green will head to Columbia on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. match-up with the Lions.
