New York, N.Y. – The 13th ranked Dartmouth women's soccer team had its nine-game unbeaten streak snapped at Columbia this afternoon. A two-goal effort by Shannon Munoz gave the Lions (7-4-3/4-0-1 Ivy) a 2-0 victory over the Big Green (10-4-1/4-1 Ivy).
“We're certainly disappointed by the loss,” said Head Coach Angie Hind. “I think we there were some good chances that we should have scored on, but there is still a lot of soccer to be played.”
Dartmouth came out strong in the first half, with several chances to score, but Columbia's Allison Vespa played well in goal, making a pair of saves. The teams battled in midfield for much of the half, but neither could find the back of the net in the stalemate. The squads headed into the midfield break in a scoreless tie.
The Big Green got to work early in the second, taking three shots in the first five minutes, but none was on the mark. Dartmouth held possession until Munoz stole the ball in the backfield and beat junior goalkeeper Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) one-on-one in the 60th minute.
Despite Columbia's 1-0 lead, Dartmouth took control offensively, taking five shots while keeping the Lions away from the goal for the next 25 minutes. The Big Green was unable to convert, and Vespa made two more saves to keep her team in the lead.
The Lions delivered the final blow to the Big Green in the 86th minute, when Munoz scored off a pass from Sophie Reiser, putting the game out of reach.
Prior to today, Dartmouth had not allowed a goal in nine games, dating back to September 15.
The Dartmouth women are now second in the league, just one point behind the Lions, but still have a pair of Ivy games with which they can make up ground. The Big Green hosts Harvard next Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
