SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Freshman Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) notched a hat trick as the Dartmouth women's hockey team blanked Union, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green blasted 54 shots on the Union goal, forcing netminder Alex Zirbel to make 33 saves in the first two periods before Dana Smullyan stopped 12 in the third.
Dartmouth, 8-8-2 overall and 5-5-1 in the ECAC, didn't waste any time getting on the board. What proved to be the gamewinner came just 4:59 into the contest when freshman Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) scored off an assist by junior Meredith Batcheller (Cleveland Heights, Ohio).
With the score 4-0 late in the second period, Bowman had a natural hat trick, scoring three straight goals. Her first came with 5:27 left in the middle stanza and her second came four minutes later for a 6-0 Dartmouth lead after two.
Bowman pushed it to 7-0 just 1:22 into the third.
For the Big Green, senior Danielle Grundy (Kelowna, B.C.) had two goals and two assists. Freshman netminder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) made 25 saves for the shutout.
The Big Green has a critical homestand coming up with three Ivy League and ECACHL games in six nights. The first is Monday, January 30 when Dartmouth and Harvard tangle at 8 p.m. in Thompson Arena in a game televised nationally by CSTV.
