HANOVER, N.H. - Three different freshmen scored for Dartmouth, and classmate Carli Clemis made 22 saves as the Big Green earned its second victory over a ranked opponent this season, downing arch-rival Harvard, 3-1, in front of 923 spectators and a national television audience.
Freshman Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) continued her goal-scoring streak, notching her third straight gamewinning goal for the Big Green. Classmates Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) and Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) also notched goals in the victory for Dartmouth.
"It was a big win for us because Harvard is a very good team," head coach Mark Hudak said. "It was just one of those nights where we put it all together against a quality opponent."
Bowman opened the scoring at 14:59 of the first by winning a neutral zone face-off back to classmate Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.), who fed it to Kennedy. Kennedy then found a streaking Bowman in front of the net, who lifted the puck under the crossbar to give Dartmouth the lead, 1-0. Clemis (Taber, Alta.) made 12 saves in the frame to keep Harvard at bay.
Harvard (10-7-2, 7-3-2 ECACHL) answered on its fifth power play of the game, as Katie Johnston got a shot behind Clemis to knot the game, 1-1. Dartmouth regained the lead just two minutes later on its first power play of the game. Junior Meredith Batcheller (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) passed the puck from the point to Bowman at the halfboards. Bowman then sent a backdoor pass to Kennedy, who snuck it through Ali Boe's five-hole at 2:52 of the second to give the Big Green the lead, 2-1.
In the third, Dartmouth outshot Harvard, 10-1, through the first nine minutes of action, but couldn't extend its lead. Clemis robbed Harvard on a golden chance at the 13:00 minute mark of the frame, and then 18 seconds later the Big Green extended its lead. Junior Caroline Ethier (Matagami, Ont.) sent a puck from the far corner to the near point, where senior Emily Nerland (Calgary, Alta.) took a wrister that was deflected by Bronson into the cage.
The Big Green went 1-2 on the power play, while Harvard went 1-6.
Dartmouth (9-8-2, 6-5-1 ECACHL) returns to action this weekend, hosting Yale Friday night at 7 p.m. and then Brown on Saturday at 4 p.m.
