Hanover, N.H. – Despite out-shooting the Pioneers 17-10 and thoroughly controlling the second half, the Big Green men's soccer team lost a heart-breaker to Sacred Heart, 1-0. Sacred Heart (5-4-1) sealed the win in the 87th minute after Dartmouth (2-5-3 / 0-1-1 Ivy) had set the pace for the contest to that point.
"This is a very difficult loss to take. I am disappointed for our players having lost a game when we were in control for so long," said Head Coach Jeff Cook.
Sacred Heart's Jeton Shoshi headed the ball through traffic in the box, just past Dartmouth goalkeeper Rowan Anders (Qualicum Beach, B.C.). Jesper Frerikkson assisted on the goal, sending the ball across the box for Shoshi to catch with just under four minutes left in regulation.
"I think concentration can become a factor, particularly defending a set piece late in th game. We have to keep our concentration on both ends of the field," noted Cook.
The two squads played an evenly-matched, physical first half, with each team taking six shots. Anders made a huge save for the Big Green in the 26th minute, halting the Pioneers' attack despite having a defender down.
Dartmouth turned on the jets in the second half, however, out-shooting Sacred Heart 11-4, maintaining possession for the majority of the period. One of the Big Green's best chances came in the 63rd minute when Mike Ordonez (Coral Gables, Fla.) had a chance with a header at an open goal, but just missed it wide.
Junior Tom Lobben (Glen Head, N.Y.) paced the Big Green with five shots in a ninety-minute effort.
Anders finished with five saves in goal while Sacred Heart's Matthew Jones tallied four saves for the shutout.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Yale in a key Ivy match-up at 2:30.
Cook continues to look forward, noting "the silver lining is that we are alive in the Ivy League and we have to focus. I know these guys will give a huge effort come Sunday against Yale. This is a very determined group."
