Boxscore
AMHERST, Mass. -- The undermanned Dartmouth men's basketball team had a tough season-opener at the University of Massachusetts Saturday, falling to the Minutemen, 98-61.
For the Big Green, sophomores Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) and Marlon Sanders (Cleveland, Ohio) both scored 14 points.
Massachusetts had four players in double figures, including Rashaun Freeman with 25 points along with 10 rebounds.
Two Big Green starters, senior Leon Pattman (Memphis, Tenn.) and junior Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.), were sidelined with injuries.
Early in the game, a steal and layup by Freeman put Dartmouth in a hole, 10-0, with 16:57 to play in the opening half.
The Big Green trimmed the UMass lead to eight, 32-24, when Barnett had a layup with 3:49 on the clock. But the Minutemen closed out the half with a 20-5 run for a 52-29 advantage at the break.
UMass shot well, connecting on 61.9 percent. Dartmouth was a solid 42.1 percent, but only 15.4 beyond the arc.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Dartmouth is on the road Tuesday, traveling to George Washington, and then returns home on Saturday, November 18, hosting Colgate in a 2 pm contest at Leede Arena.
