Dartmouth Basketball Falls to George Washington, 94-49
Tuesday, November 14, 2006
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 29-point game from guard Carl Elliott, propelled the Colonials of George Washington past the Big Green, 94-49, in the team's second game of the season in Washington, D.C.
The Colonials jumped out to a fast start, causing two turnovers in Dartmouth's first three possessions, and out scoring the Big Green, 8-0, from the opening tip. Sophomore Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) got the Big Green on the board at 17:13 of the first half dropping a three pointer to add some life to the Dartmouth bench.
The Colonials weren't fazed by the shot, as they went on a, 7-0, run for the next two minutes of play. Carl hit his second three of the half with just 16 seconds left, then assisted teammate Noel Wilmore on their final possession, as Wilmore buried a shot from behind the arc as time ran out in the half.
George Washington scored 21 points off Big Green turnovers in the first half, accumulating a, 52-18, lead going into the locker rooms.
The Big Green came out of the half fired up and ready for a comeback, staying possession for possession with the Colonials for the first five minutes. Senior Jason Meyer (Covington, Ohio) gave Dartmouth some momentum, knocking down his first two shots of the half, both from long range.
But the consistent play of the Colonials chipped away at the Big Green's defense causing the squad to make uncharacteristic turnovers and fouls. Dartmouth ended the night giving up 24 turnovers, and committing 20 personal fouls.
George Washington went an impressive, 20-for-24, from the free throw stripe on the night, and putting four players in double-digits.
The Colonials defense did their part on the night holding the Big Green to 46 points for five minutes of play late in the second half. Sophomore DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) scored his first bucket of the night, and the Big Green's last with 49 seconds left in the contest.
Meyer ended the night as Dartmouth's leading scorer, putting up 11 points for the squad, who fall to 0-2 on the season.
Dartmouth kicks off its home schedule on Saturday, November 18, when they will play host to the Raiders of Colgate. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
