Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Dartmouth women's basketball team (2-6) overcame a 14-point deficit to hold a 65-64 lead over Big 10 foe Michigan (7-2) with just seconds remaining on the clock. The Big Green played aggressive defense on the Wolverines last possession but Melinda Queen hit a three with four-tenths of a second remaining to seal the victory for her team.
The Big Green played just seven players in the contest, six with significant minutes. Dartmouth was without the services of starting center Darcy Rose (Fort Collins, Colo.) who was not with the team for personal reasons.
"I'm very proud of my athletes," said Head Coach Chris Wielgus. "We came here undermanned and they played with enormous pride and the way we like them to play. I am proud of how they played together. They love this game of basketball, they work hard at it and it shows."
Despite being undermanned and undersized, Dartmouth out-rebounded Michigan 41-30. Senior Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) led all scorers with 26 points, her third consecutive 20+point effort
Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead, up 11-2 at 15:32 before Michigan flexed its muscles to go on a 13-0 run, up 15-11 at 11:38. Dartmouth's Taylor hit a three to take it to 15-14, but the Big Green would go another four minutes before its next field goal.
The Wolverines took advantage of their size to close out the half up 12, 38-26.
Dartmouth opened the second half with a triple from Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.). Schram would go on to score a career-high 21 points with six made threes. The Big Green quietly cut the lead to five, 50-45 at 10:40, thanks to back-to-back treys by Taylor, who converted a four-point play on the second.
Michigan rebuilt its lead to eight, but Dartmouth would not back down. Schram tied the game at 57-57 at 5:36 and then gave her team the lead, up 62-59 at 3:09. The Big Green held onto that advantage, increasing it to 65-64. After a series of time outs, Dartmouth broke Michigan's full-court press, but was unable to convert late free-throws, setting up the final possession and game-winning shot for the Michigan.
Dartmouth shot 37.3 percent for the game, including a 45.5 percent effort in the second half. Michigan was a solid 49 percent from the field.
Taylor finished with 26 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Schram added 21 points and four boards while Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) neared a double-double with a game-high nine boards and nine points.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Monday when it travles to Central Michigan for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
