Feb. 11, 2006
HANOVER, N.H. -
Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) scored the game winning goal with 1:02 left in overtime to push the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 2-1 win over Princeton on Saturday afternoon in front of a sold-out crowd at Thompson Arena.
David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) each had two points in the win.
The victory improves Dartmouth's record to 13-10-2, 11-5-2 in the league while Princeton drops to 9-15-1 overall and 6-11-1 in the ECAC Hockey League.
The visitors got off to a slow start and a dominating Dartmouth team took advantage, outshooting the Tigers 13-1 in the opening period.
Jones, the Big Green's second leading scorer, lit the lamp first 17:04 into the game. The sophomore received the pass from Ouellette in the neutral zone, going in two-on-one into the Tiger end. After faking a pass he chose to shoot and beat Princeton netminder Eric Leroux high on the glove side. Glass also picked up an assist.
The Tigers edged Dartmouth in shots in the second period, 9-to-8. But both goaltenders were equal to the task and the score remained 1-0 in Dartmouth's favor after two periods of play.
After several opportunities by Dartmouth to go ahead it was Christian Read notching his first career goal at 4:58 of the third period that pulled the Tigers even. Brett Westgarth collected a Dartmouth clearing attempt at the blue line and threw the puck towards the net where Read redirected it by Dartmouth netminder
Mike Devine to even the score. That was all the scoring for regulation as Princeton outshot Dartmouth 10-7 in the final frame.
The game opened up in the final five minutes and was more wide-open as play went into overtime. Each team managed two shots in the extra frame, including a pipe by Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) but it was Dartmouth's second shot that ended the game as Glass scored from the doorstep at 3:58 for the victory. Ouellette kept the puck in at the blueline and quickly fed it low to Jones. Dartmouth had numbers low and Jones slid the puck through the slot where Glass scored.
Devine made 21 saves for Dartmouth and is now 12-6-2. Leroux finished the night with 28 saves.
The Big Green is now in a tie with Colgate for second place in the ECACHL and is just one point away from league-leading Cornell. Dartmouth will be back in action next Friday traveling to Cornell and then Colgate on Saturday.
