HANOVER, N.H. - With his first career trick, sophomore David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) helped the Darmouth (15-12-2, 13-6-2 ECACHL) men's hockey team to a 5-2 win over Clarkson (16-14-3, 9-10-2) and a tie for first in the league. The Big Green potted three third period goals as Dartmouth clinched a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey League tournament which starts next weekend.
Dartmouth lit the lamp just 1:42 into the contest when J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) picked off a Golden Knights pass, sending the puck up to a flying Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) as the junior shot behind Clarkson netminder David Leggio for the 1-0 score.
The Knights tied things up midway through the second stanza off a goal by Mike Sullivan as the two teams traded goals over the next minute. Dartmouth pulled ahead at 8:34 with Jones' first goal of the night. Assists went to Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) and Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.). Then Clarkson tied the game at 2-2 when Philipe Paquet scored at 9:09.
Jones and the Big Green got things going in the final 20 minutes of play. Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) potted his team leading fourth game winner of the season, 1:08 into the third as Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Jarrett Sampson (Prince Albert, Sask.) got the helpers. Jones' second of the night came at 11:04 as Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) and Glass assisted. Jones' third goal came on an empty net strike as Glass set his teammate up.
Mike Devine earned his 14th win of the season as the Dartmouth netminder saved 19 shots. Leggio made 31 saves for Clarkson.
With Cornell's loss to Renssealer and Colgate's defeat of Union, Dartmouth and Colgate are now in a tie for first place in the ECACHL but Dartmouth wins the tiebreaker with the Raiders.
Tomorrow night the Big Green will play host to St. Lawrence at 7:00 pm. The Saints come into Thompson Arena after a 3-2 loss to Harvard. SLU and the Crimson are in a tie for fourth.
