FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Dartmouth softball team dropped a pair of games in a doubleheader at Alumni Softball Field in Fairfield. The Stags won the games, 8-3 and 8-4. The Big Green falls to 7-13 on the season while Fairfield improves to 20-10.
In the first game, Fairfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, before heavy rain forced a one-hour delay. The Stags scored three times in the first inning and then a double in the second frame pushed the Fairfield lead to four runs.
Dartmouth came back from the rain delay with a three-run four inning to cut the lead to 4-3. Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) started things off by doubling to left center before Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice. With Fry at third Alicia Petryk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) singled up the middle to score Fry and advance Petryk to third. Megan Snively (Dallas, Ore.) loaded the bases with her single to second base. Then with two outs Jess Reiten (Santa Ana, Calif.) doubled down the right field line to score the final two Dartmouth runs of the inning.
Fairfield ended all come back hopes however with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the 8-3 victory.
Pitcher Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) picked up the loss going with 3.2 innings before being relieved by Abby Reed (Barrington, Ill.).
Dartmouth broke out on top in the second inning of game two, scoring twice off a two-run double by Snively. Fairfield answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Dartmouth tied the score in the fourth inning, as Reiten's single sent Gleason home.
Once again, Fairfield came right back to put away any Dartmouth hopes by scoring twice in the fifth inning and three times in the sixth.
In the circle Trudeau went the complete game, picking up her third loss of the season. For the two games Snively went 5-for-6 with one double and two RBIs while Fry was 3-for-7 with two runs, two doubles, one home run and one RBI.
The Big Green will open up its home season on Tuesday April 4, hosting Providence in a doubleheader that begins at 2:30 pm. Dartmouth begins the Ivy League season on April 8 and 9, traveling to Cornell and Columbia.
