HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Angie Soriaga (College Station, Texas) tied her career-high with 24 points as the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Harvard, 76-55, to win its second consecutive Ivy League crown and 15th overall.
"I'm so proud of these kids," said head coach Chris Wielgus, who earned her 350th career win tonight. "This is a dream come true for them and the culmination of a lot of hard work. It was a total team effort from top to bottom and I couldn't be prouder."
Soriaga hit six three-pointers and was joined by four other Dartmouth players in double figures. Junior Fatima Kamara (Carrollton, Texas) came off the bench and nearly registered a triple-double with 16 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and a career-high nine assists. Senior Krista Perry (Boise, Idaho) added 10 points and classmate Jeannie Cullen (Janesville, Wis.) had 10 points, six boards and six assists. Freshman Darcy Rose (Fort Collins, Colo.) tied her career-high with nine points.
The game remained close early and the teams were tied at 21-21 when the Big Green went on a 7-0 spurt on a three-pointer by Soriaga and layups by Rose and Kamara. Dartmouth held a 30-26 lead at the intermission, but went on a 12-0 run to open the second half and take control of the game. Harvard never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way and Dartmouth built its lead to as many as 25 points with just over six minutes remaining.
Harvard was led by Shana Franklin, who had 12 points, and Katie Rollins, who had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Big Green improves to 21-6 overall and 12-2 in the Ivy League, while the Crimson concludes its season at 12-15 and 8-6 in the Ancient Eight. Dartmouth, which shares the Ivy League crown with Brown and Princeton, will now advance to an Ivy League playoff to determine the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Since all three teams were tied at 12-2 in conference play and none of the tiebreakers could determine a top seed, a random draw was conducted on Tuesday night and Princeton was awarded the top seed. Therefore, Dartmouth will play Brown on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at John J. Lee Amphitheather at Yale University. The winner will advance to play Princeton on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Yale.
