NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Dartmouth women's basketball team kept its NCAA tournament hopes alive with a 73-62 triumph over Brown (18-10) in an Ivy playoff game on Friday night at the John J. Lee Amphitheater on the campus of Yale University. Dartmouth (22-6) will now advance to play Princeton on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with the winner earning the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
"We're delighted to be a part of March Madness," said Dartmouth head coach Chris Wielgus. "I'm proud of our kids with their tenacity. Hats off to Brown, though. It was a great game."
Junior Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead four Big Green players in double figures. Senior point guard Angie Soriaga (College Station, Texas) added 14 points and four assists, while sophomore Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) tossed in 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Junior Fatima Kamara (Carrollton, Texas) chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Brown was led by Colleen Kelly, who had 20 points and Sarah Hayes, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Brown held an early 17-8 lead with 12:45 to go in the first half, but Dartmouth went on a 9-0 run to tie the score at 17-17 after a Soriaga jumper. The teams were deadlocked at 36-36 at the intermission. Brown shot 51.7 percent from the field, while Dartmouth hit just 33.3 percent of its shots in the period, but the difference came at the free throw line where the Big Green was 12-of-13, while the Bears were just 3-of-9.
In the second half, Dartmouth quickly established a six-point cushion at 44-38 after a Scott layup with 17:04 left. The Bears climbed back and tied the score at 47-47 with 10:20 remaining, but baskets by Taylor, Soriaga and Kamara helped the Big Green establish a lead it would not relinquish. The Bears cut the gap to three points again with 2:04 remaining, but Taylor answered again on the next possession with a driving layup along the baseline. She was fouled and converted the conventional three-point play to bring the margin back to six points with 1:52 remaining. Brown was forced to foul down the stretch and Dartmouth converted its free throws to provide the final margin.
