Game One Box ---- Game Two BoxNEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The Dartmouth softball team swept its first Ivy League games of the season today, defeating Yale 5-1 in the first game and then 7-4 in the nightcap at Dewitt Family Field in New Haven. With the wins Dartmouth improves to 11-16 on the season, 4-2 in the league while Yale falls to 24-16, 1-5 Ivy.
The Big Green put three runs across in the top of the first frame of the game. Erika Owen was the first runner on for Dartmouth. With two outs Ashley Gleason singled, moving Owen to second. Alicia Petryk continued the hitting by singling to left field, scoring Owen. Sarah Bankoff had her first hit of the game by putting the ball into play as Petryk advanced to second and Gleason moved to third, loading the bases. Megan Snively scored the final two runs for Dartmouth after hitting the ball up the middle. Petryk and Gleason came around to score.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the fifth and tried to rally in the sixth with a two-out double but good Dartmouth fielding prevented Yale from getting anymore runs across.
The Big Green added another run in the top of the seventh. Fry had her first extra-base hit of the game, doubling to left field. Gleason advanced Fry with her third single on the day as Gleason then stole second and Fry came home on a Yale throwing error. Bankoff continued the hitting with another Big Green double, scoring Gleason.
A leadoff triple by Yale in the bottom of the seventh gave the Bulldogs a runner. Then with one out a fly-out to left field allowed the Big Green to tag the runner out at home, ending the game.
Angela Megaw went the complete game in the circle allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five.
At the plate, Gleason was 4-4 with two runs while Bankoff was 3-4 with one RBI.
Dartmouth took the lead in Game Two at the top of the third. Katie Chifcian led off with a bunt single as Bankoff also bunted to put runners at first and second. With one out Fry doubled to right center scoring Chifcian and Bankoff. Gleason continued her hitting on the day also doubling to right center to score Fry.
The Bulldogs put a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning but Dartmouth pitcher Stephanie Trudeau allowed no more.
The Big Green tacked on another run in the top of the fourth to go up 4-1. Abby Reed led off with a single. Kali Lemke put down a sacrifice bunt but reached first on a Bulldog error, putting Dartmouth runners at first and second. A sac fly by Chifcian to right field brought Reed across the plate and advanced Lemke to third. Bankoff walked in her next at-bat to put runners at the corners but Bulldog pitcher Deanna DiBernardi struck out the next two Dartmouth batters to end the inning.
With two outs, three straight singles had the bases juiced for Fry who knocked a two-out double bringing in two runs to give Dartmouth a 6-1 lead. A wild pitch scored Owen and moved Fry to third.
The Bulldogs put three across in the bottom of the sixth to cut Dartmouth's lead to 7-4 but the Big Green retired all three Yale batters in the seventh to preserve the victory.
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend, opening up its home season in Ivy League games against Penn on Friday and Princeton on Saturday.
