PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman pitcher Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) led the Dartmouth softball team to a 2-1 win in the second of two games against Brown this afternoon in Providence. The Bears won the first contest, 8-2. With the victory the Big Green improves to 12-17, 5-3 in the Ivy League while Brown falls to 13-23, 3-5 Ivy.
Brown started Game One off with a double to left field. Dartmouth starter Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) sat the next two batters down before a single to center field drove in the first run of the game to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Dartmouth attempted to get the run back in the top of the second when Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) led off with a single. A Brown error and a single by Megan Snively (Dallas, Ore.) loaded the bases but the Bears starting pitcher, Michelle Moses struck the next two batters out.
The Big Green put two across in the third. Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) led off with a double and then came in to score on an Erika Owen (Newhall, Calif.) triple. Gleason singled to score Owen three batters later. Dartmouth had bases loaded in the fourth off singles by Snively and Owen but the Brown defense allowed no more runs.
The Bears roared to life in the fifth scoring three runs off a bases clearing triple with two outs. Brown added two more in the bottom of the sixth to take the 8-2 victory.
Owen went 3-4 with one run and one RBI while Snively and Gleason both had two hits. Megaw went five innings in the circle, giving up six runs while striking out four. Abby Reed (Barrington, Ill.) came on in relief going one inning and allowed just one earned run.
In the night cap the Bears again scored first, plating one in the bottom of the first inning before Big Green starter Trudeau settled down and allowed no more runs for the rest of the day.
Dartmouth had runners on in the third after singling twice but a flyout to center ended the inning for the Big Green.
Dartmouth finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. With one out, singles by Chifcian and Owen put runners at second and third. Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) came to bat and hit her third double of the weekend clearing the bases and giving Dartmouth a 2-1 lead.
An error and a walk put two Brown runners on in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and an intentional walk to load the bases Trudeau struck out the final batter to get the win.
Trudeau improves to 7-5 on the season. She allowed just one run on three hits for the complete game victory. Chifcian was 2-4 with one run and Snively was 2-3. Kelsey Wilson, in the circle for Brown, went the complete game giving up one earned run on seven hits.
The Big Green takes on Penn Friday, April 22 in its home opener and then hosts league-leading Princeton on Saturday, April 23. Game time for both days is 1:00 p.m.
