HANOVER, N.H. - Despite coming back twice in a 13-inning Game Two, the Dartmouth softball team dropped both games this afternoon to Penn. The Quakers took the first contest, 5-2 and then stormed back in the top of the 13th to plate the winning run in a 7-5 victory.
In Game One Dartmouth (12-20, 5-5) broke up Penn (17-25, 4-8) pitcher Emily Denstedt's no-hitter in the bottom of the sixth after the Quakers had put five runs on the board. Penn got on the board first by scoring four runs in the fifth and then added one in the sixth with a home run to left field.
The Big Green started the bottom of the sixth off with doubles by Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Alicia Petryk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) before Sarah Bankoff (Lynnfield, Mass.) singled to score two but Dartmouth was unable to plate anymore in that inning.
Three strikeouts by Dartmouth pitcher Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) in the top of the seventh set up the bottom of the frame for the Big Green to attempt a comeback. A single by Stephanie Trudeau and a walk by Katie Chifcian put runners at the corners but three straight flyouts ended the inning and the game for Dartmouth.
Annie Kinsey and Christina Khosravi both went 3-4 for the Quakers. Denstedt went the complete game giving up five walks while striking out three.
In the circle for Dartmouth, Megaw walked just two while striking out a season-high nine batters. Gleason, Petryk, Bankoff and Trudeau all recorded one hit for the Big Green.
In the nightcap it was Penn that again took the lead. The Quakers plated its first run in the top of the third. Dartmouth had runners on the corners in the bottom of the inning but could not get a run across. Two more Penn runs in the top of the fourth gave the Quakers a 4-0 lead.
Dartmouth put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Denise Hasson (Encino, Calif.) started the inning off walking and then advancing on a wild pitch. Chifcian singled with Hasson coming home. A single by Kalli Lemke (Salinas, Calif.) put runners at first and second but the Big Green could bring no more around.
Dartmouth evened things up at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. With one out Hasson reached on an error before Abby Reed (Barrington, Ill.) singled to move her to second. Then with two outs Fry walked to load the bases before Gleason had a bunt single to score Hasson. Petryk continued the hitting with a single to left field scoring Gleason and Fry.
Penn took the lead back in the top of the ninth. A single and a hit batter put runners at first and second. A sacrifice bunt by Julia Cheney moved the runners over before a ground out to the pitcher by Brandi King brought the runner across.
Dartmouth tied things up when Fry blasted a home run over the left field fence with two outs. The two teams played three more scoreless innings before Penn's Cheney hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to take a 7-5 lead in the top of the 13th.
Chifcian, Lemke, Fry and Snively both had two hits for the Big Green. In the circle, Stephanie Trudeau went the entire game, giving up all seven earned runs while striking out seven.
Dartmouth will take on Princeton in a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:00 pm. Should the game be rained out it will be played on Monday with the game time to be determined.
