St. Paul, Minn. - On the first day of the Golden Gopher Invitational the Dartmouth women's soccer team lost a hard fought 1-0 game to host Minnesota. The Golden Gophers scored the only goal midway through the first half. The loss drops the Big Green to 2-3 on the season while Minnesota improves to 5-1-1. Dartmouth continues play in Minnesota, taking on Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 11:00 am.
Elena Fruci from Minnesota scored the only goal of the day off assists from Lindsey Schwartz and Carlie Edwards. A pass to Fruci as she ran across the top of the box from 18-yards out allowed her to put the ball into the left corner. The Big Green dominated play all day but could not get the tying goal. Dartmouth had it's best chance with seven seconds left in the contest as the Big Green was given a free kick opportunity but it was called off the line.
Dartmouth goalie Amanda Webb made one save on the day while Chelsey Turner had to save five Big Green shots. Dartmouth's Ali Hubbard, Sarah Johnson, Becky Poskin, Whitney Douthett and Maggie Goldstein all had shots on goal as the Green outshot the Gophers, 18-3 with five corner kicks to none.
"Minnesota was very physical, strong and defensive minded, it was hard for us to get past them," said head coach Angie Hind. "We had a few scrambles but we just couldn't finish. We outshot them and continued to pressure the ball but our offense just wasn't enough with their defense."
