Minneapolis, Minn. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team bounced back from a Friday loss to drub the University of Iowa, 5-0 Sunday at the Gopher Invitational. The Big Green netted four second half goals in the final 15 minutes of play for the win. Monica Martin de Bustamante (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) recorded a hat trick while Nicole Cameli (Brookfield, Wisc.) added two goals. With the win Dartmouth is 3-3 on the season.
A potent Dartmouth offense came out much like they did on Friday against Minnesota with lots of opportunities but not much to show for it. Martin de Bustamante notched her first goal off a cross from Megan Wigas (Southborough, Mass.) at the top of the six-yard box at 34:51 in the first half. Hawkeye goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt recorded six of her nine saves in the first half to keep the match at 1-0 heading to halftime.
Iowa's defense once again held Dartmouth in the early stages of the second period, but the Big Green took advantage of some Hawkeye miscues in the late stages of the match. The Big Green scored goals in the 76th, 80th, 85th and 86th minute to seal the victory. Cameli recorded her first of the day off an assist by Annie Stanley, her first of two, before Martin de Bustamante notched the next two goals. Cameli had the Big Green's last goal. Assists on the day went to Stanley, Maggie Goldstein (Hillsborough, Calif. ), Anna Barrett (Washington, D.C.) and Sarah Johnson (Shorewood, Minn.).
"I'm very proud of this team, it was a tremendous comeback after the disappointment of Friday," said head coach Angie Hind. "We possessed the ball very well and despite frustration at times we created a lot of chances which gave us confidence. It was a good weekend overall and we are a better team for it."
For the second game in a row Dartmouth recorded 18 shots on goal while holding Iowa to just two. Big Green keeper Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) needed to just make one save as she picked up her second shutout of the season. For their efforts Martin de Bustamente, Wijas and Colleen Kelly (Potomac, Md.) were named to the all-tournament team.
Dartmouth opens Ivy League play Sunday against Brown after a midweek matchup with Vermont. The Big Green and the Catamounts will square off Wednesday at 4:00 before Brown travels to Hanover for a 1:00 game.
