Dartmouth senior Sarah Johnson (Shorewood, Minn.) gave the Big Green a boost off the bench, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over the University of Vermont this afternoon. Winners of two straight, the Big Green improved to 4-3 on the season while the Catamounts dropped to 1-5. Dartmouth's offensive corps riddled Vermont's Eliza Bradley with 24 shots.
“We saw a very special performance from Sarah Johnson today and were delighted to see her hard work pay off with two goals,” said Head Coach Angie Hind.
The game started off with both teams exchanging shots at an even clip, but the Big Green soon began to dominate the contest. “We really stepped it up halfway through the first half and dominated, but missed some chances to score,” added Hind.
That changed when Johnson converted a free-kick from 22 yards out, banking the ball over Vermont's defensive wall and into the left corner of the goal at 38:29. The Big Green carried that momentum into the second half, dominating possession and taking 14 shots.
Johnson stepped up again to seal the win for Dartmouth with a converted penalty kick at 52:06 after classmate Emily Tracy (Belfair, Wash.) was fouled in the penalty box.
Coach Hind noted that “our defensive line was very solid and senior captain Megan Wijas put forth an outstanding complete-game effort.” Junior goalkeeper Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) notched the ninth shutout of her career with three saves, moving her into seventh place on the all-time list. Dartmouth's defense allowed just four shots by the Catamounts.
The Big Green will be back in action again on Sunday when it hosts Brown in the Ivy League opener at 1:00 p.m. at Chase Field.
